As I understand it, the Arabic alphabet is broken up into sun letters and moon letters, which impact the way "al-" is pronounced. When followed by a sun letter, the L is effectively silent. Since J is a moon letter, the L in al-Jinniyya is pronounced fully. (AR-wuh all-jin-EE-uh)
