Baldwin the crusader was born in 1077 in Trier, the oldest city in Germany, great-grandson of a Norse raiding chief. In 1096, he followed the call of Pope Innocent II on Crusade, and followed Godfrey and Baldwin of Boulogne to the Holy land. He returned home in 1102, and began to develop an interest in the blacksmith's trade, soon becoming an apprentice to Master Guttorm Arnesson (Hairre Affair, A.S. 49).
Baldwin the landsknecht was born in 1520, and grew up a poor farmer's son. Recruited by Maximillian's Swiss-inspired mercenary corps, he pledged his sword and life to King and Country, campaigning throughout Europe. However, his belief in Luther's teachings caused him to flee anti-protestant ire in 1543. Moving north, Baldwin was hired by an English privateer, Don Michael St. Christian, becoming his Cadet (Spring Coronation, A.S. 49). After Michael's elevation to the Order of Defence, Baldwin continued under Michael's tutelage as his first Provost (Warriors and Warlords, A.S. 51). He was then elevated to the Order of Defence at St. Radegund's Faire, A.S. 54 |
