Lavinia is the only heir of her Venetian father, Captain Mercutio di Mariano. He amicably captured Lavinia’s mother, Nasarin during the Siege of Thessalonica (1422-1430). Lavinia di Mariano claims relation to Sandro Botticelli, however this fact has no evidence. It’s rumored that she has a lover and betrothed in Rome.
Fearing that his daughter would be ruined by a life of sailors and war, Captain Mariano sent Lavinia to Florence to become a “lady”. There she spent more time with raucous and indiscreet artists than with the genteel lords and ladies that were arranged. Captain Mariano then sent Lavinia to Rome, hoping she would become pious, but she was willfully tarnished by a Vatican guard. Realizing his daughter would be as crass as he despite location, Captain Mariano left Lavinia to her own worldly travels with the promise to return to claim his ship when he passes.
