Lady Hara Hana

Hara Hana-san is a countrified Heian/Kamakura period noble lady (her last name means fields or plains and first name means flower) who studies the court classics, contemporary diaries, and intricate modes of dress but can usually be found clad in a simple kosode (early kimono) and mobakama (wrapping skirt). Her interests are mostly fiber based, such as period methods of decorating fabric, such as shibori (really intricate tie dye) and paste resist dyeing. While she has studied the Buddhism so popular with the imperial court, her spirituality is more Shinto based (see countrified, above).
Hara-san really, really loves ginkgo leaves. Her favorite emakimono (painted scroll) is the Chouji-giga (Scroll of Frolicking Animals), though she loves anything with horses, dragons, kirin (unicorns), or shi-shi (guardian lion-dogs). Ginkgo leaves, carp, morning glories, oak leaves, and butterflies also bring her joy. She prefers scrolls in Japanese or plain English and loves jewel tones of blue, red, green, and purple. |
