Rough IPA transcription: ['kov.la 'ɪŋ.ɛn 'sɪ.tɾɪ.ka wik 'aɪ.vaɾ]
Phonetic transcription for non-linguists: COVE-la ing-en SIT-trick-a week I-var
Meaning: Cobflaith, daughter of Sigtryggr, son of Ívarr
Back when I was Coblaigh inghean Uí Éinrí, we were pronouncing the name "COVE-lee," which was wrong, but it stuck and I liked it. I will also answer to "COVE-la" or anything that sounds remotely like what I think people might say after reading my name. I was given the Irish pronunciation by the person whose research I used to create the name (she happened to be at Herald's Point that day at Pennsic).
Anyway...the whole reason for this persona is because I geeked out when I found Gaelicized versions of Norse names from the Irish Annals...
10th century Ireland, daughter of an Irish woman and a Norse man. I've been meaning to create a Norse name for my persona as well, being that she has Norse relatives who might not have used her Gaelic name. I was considering Kára Sigtryggsdóttir. Sigtryggr is the same thing as Sitriucc, which is my persona's father's name (as indicated about, my Gaelic name gives the names of my father and grandfather, Gaelic versions of their Norse names, so my father was Sigtryggr Ívarsson, or Sigtryggr, son of Ívarr). "Kára" might have meant "curly" and I was thinking that my Norse relatives might have called me a nickname like that rather than using my Gaelic name (I have curly hair). But I haven't made any decisions. And yes, I need to stop now before I start doing research to come up with my mother's name, etc...heh.
This is an ongoing exploration... (I'm a linguist, so name research is dangerously fun. This is why I am currently working on a Basque name submission...)
I was notified that my name passed as Cobflaith ingen Sitriucca meic Ímair on April 22, 2013.
Anyway, I am a bard (I admit it). I sing, write songs, and play stringed instruments (guitar and ukulele, currently). I love improvising harmonies! I have sung with Cantore Borealis at seven Pennsics (two years I led the group). Lately I've been into Norman England - I have four Norman-inspired songs so far. I'm also amusing myself here and there by writing new poetic translations to trouvère songs and researching non-cis-male poets and composers.
I adore doing name research. And I like fiber arts. And I absolutely adore cats. :-D At one point I was dabbling in the scribal arts and hope to get back into that again.
You can find lyrics to my songs, as well as links to videos of performances, on my YouTube channel (click here for my SCA-friendly playlist) and on my SCA song blog. I performed my own solo concert twice at Pennsic (in 2018 and 2019).
Device: Per chevron gules and purpure a guitar between in chief two open scrolls argent each charged with a musical note purpure.
