Greetings unto the Heralds (and non-Heralds) of Northshield!

Over the next few issues, I’m going to tell you about some of the many indispensable things heralds can do in the Kingdom. This month I will tell you about Site Heralds.

Site Heralds are the “town criers” of an event - they cry out things like the next set of classes, changes to the schedule, and “Court will start in ten minutes.”

Being a Site Herald can be as simple as volunteering when the Herald in Charge or the Event Steward says, “I need someone to announce this schedule change.” You make the announcement in each area, then report back. And you’re done! Congratulations! You were a Site Herald. Remember to include it on your next quarterly report.

It can also be as complex as being a member of staff of a big, outdoor, multi-day event with other Site Heralds. This is the same idea, but on a larger scale. A larger, more complex event means there’s more going on; a more complicated schedule means more to announce more often and to a wider audience, often over a wider area. In this sort of situation there is usually a designated meeting place with something like a bulletin board for announcements that need to be made. You may be given a walkie-talkie, Zello channel, or some kind of group chat to help speed up the process. You might even be issued a Herald’s baldric. Wear it proudly while on your rounds!

If you want to learn more about being a Site Herald, you can contact your local group Herald, your regional Herald, or me. If you want to offer your services as a Site Herald, check the event calendar and contact the Event Stewards or the Herald in Charge. The SCA College of Arms website has several very useful voice heraldry articles you can check out as well.

Come and be shouty at events! I look forward to hearing you!
