Greetings, Northshield!
In a short 5 months the Stellar University of Northshield (SUN) will be held in the Canton of Coille Stormeil on November 10. I thought a refresher on what SUN is would be in order.
SUN is many things: a chance to learn, a chance to share, a chance to enjoy an activity you love. It is a day of classes – all sorts of classes: sewing, cooking, calligraphy, illumination, heraldry, brewing & vintning, fiber arts, woodworking, animal husbandry, coin making, painting, and many more. Then there are the perfoming arts, with classes on singing, dancing, storytelling, poetry, and instruments. The arts martial can be represented as well with topics such as footwork from period sources, making weapons, history of catapults, and fighter clothing. Learning how to run a shire, tips on group dynamics, planning large events, and how to fill out official reports can all be taught. Basically, the list is endless.
SUN is also a chance to come together in groups interested in an activity and just be together, doing your craft, sharing, and learning. Last year there was a corner dedicated to the fiber arts where all things related to it were discussed — it was a very relaxed, wonderful place.
I hope to have classes for everyone, whether they are a costumer, a fighter, a singer, a seneschal, or a new member who doesn’t yet know where their interest lies. And to do this, I will need teachers. Soon I will be reaching out to all, asking you to consider sharing your passion. Classes can be as small as you are comfortable with, and run anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours. They can be at beginner, intermediate, or advanced level.
This year a variety of surveys are being posted to find out what you want to learn on our day of classes. I cannot guarantee that every request will be met, but I will do my best. And these surveys are important, as I am learning so much of what is needed; the last survey had 24 requests for pottery classes! I had no idea there was so much interest! Now I do and I will work on it.
So mark your calendars, fill out the surveys, and prepare for a wonderful day in November.,
