9th century Manx. I am daughter of a a trader and his wife. At the age of 8, our family made the journey from our home in Eire to Ellan Vannin (the Isle of Mann) after my father cultivated relations with a few members of the Tynwald Court. We lived comfortably but not extravagantly and I was able to receive a fine education as well as tutelage in the needle arts, as it was an interest of mine. I also discovered a love of music, and found friends in the musicians and singers that had also made the journey from Ireland. When old enough, I was permitted to travel on my father's ships to Northumbria, East Anglia, and Mercia. This is when I discovered a love of travel and began helping my father more often with his business affairs. I traveled as often as I was able. I loathed each journey, but loved each new destination. Upon entering adulthood, I was wed to a Dane who knew my father from the Tynwald Court. He was a kind man and allowed me to remain in Ellan Vannin with my family when he traveled back home to resupply. At my request, I was able to join him on one such expedition and remain for the winter. I learned new music and new needle techniques. I enjoyed my time there, but the severe weather demanded my return the following spring. Now, I devote myself to my family and to my arts; I teach as often as I can to make sure that the knowledge that I have gained from my travels will not be forgotten; and I enjoy the company of my friends. |
