Old King Matthais

By Eleanora vert Morgan

The Magyar had no king for eighteen years,
And were tired of foreign rule.
So a great concourse of Nobles acclaimed him King -
MATYAS HUN YADI the first.
They tried to make him their puppet King,
He was determined to rule alone.
A natural soldier and a Renaissance prince,
Known as Matthias Corvinus - The Raven

Chorus:
He was loved even by the common man,
Who called him "The JUST"
For he fought for their rights and their liberty,
When ever injustice he did see,
through his eyes as a man not a king.

Though just a lad of fifteen years,
When he was elected their king.
He put the Barron's in order and defeated the Turks,
And he reformed the treasury.
Revolt rose up against his reforms,
But king Matthias always succeeded.
He fought with force but he spoke with calm,
And even his enemies retreated.

Chorus

At the death of his first wife - Catherine,
He married Beatrice of Aragon.
Because of his great love for Italian Art,
For she was a princess of Naples.
This union affected the culture,
As he acquired many paintings,
Sculptures and illuminations,
Bringing Renaissance to his people.

Chorus

Art-isians and scholars were welcomed at his court,
For he loved the arts and the sciences.
A well spoken man in many tongues
And a friend of the Papacy.
Throughout his reign his kingdom flourished,
And magnificent buildings sprang forth.
For his love of the arts and philosophy,
He built Corvina the great Library.

Chorus

A patron of learning and of culture,
He brought light to a darkened world.
A valiant King and an Honored man,
He brought order and faith to their lives.
But all was lost at the end of his reign,
And soon all of his conquests were gone,
For troublesome times were to follow his death,
But the culture he created lives on.

Chorus

He was loved even by the common man,
Who called him "The JUST",
For he fought for their rights and their liberty,
When ever injustice he did see,
Through his eyes as a man not a king.

(Repeat chorus and sing the last line twice.)
