Archery in the SCA: Sharpening Your Aim
Step onto the range and feel the satisfying thwack of an arrow hitting its mark! Archery in the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) offers a dynamic and engaging way to experience the ancient art of the bow and arrow. More than just target practice, SCA archery blends historical authenticity with a strong focus on safety, welcoming everyone from seasoned marksmen to curious beginners.
Our archery programs allow you to explore the historical use of bows in diverse ways:
Target Archery: Precision and Skill
Hone your accuracy on the target range, where the focus is on mastering your aim and technique. You'll shoot at traditional bullseye targets, but we also create period-specific challenges – imagine aiming at small castle windows, distant moving targets, or even "charging warriors"! Many of our groups participate in inter-Kingdom competitions, letting you test your skills against archers from across the SCA's "Known World."
Combat Archery: Ranged Support on the Battlefield
For those who crave the thrill of the melee, Combat Archery brings bows onto the armored battlefield. Here, archers provide vital ranged support during large-scale wars and skirmishes. We use specially designed arrows with large, padded blunt tips and bows with lower draw weights to ensure safe, yet impactful, hits on armored opponents. Donning full SCA-legal armor, combat archers play a strategic role, disrupting enemy formations and turning the tide of battle.
Historical Equipment & Safety First
We encourage the use of historically appropriate equipment, including traditional longbows, recurve bows, and period-style crossbows (no modern compounds or sights!). Arrows feature natural fletching and are carefully constructed for safety.
Safety is the absolute priority. All archery activities are overseen by warranted Archery Marshals who ensure strict adherence to safety rules, inspect equipment, and guide participants. Before joining in, archers complete an "authorization" process, a simple safety test to ensure everyone understands the rules of safe archery.
Open to All
SCA Archery is incredibly accessible. Our local groups frequently hold practices where newcomers can try out loaner gear, receive instruction from experienced archers, and quickly become part of our welcoming community. Whether you dream of piercing the center of a distant target or providing crucial support on the battlefield, SCA archery offers a unique blend of historical recreation, skill development, and camaraderie.

Thrown Weapons in the SCA: Honing Ancient Skills
Discover the satisfying thud of a perfectly thrown axe or knife hitting its mark with Thrown Weapons in the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA)! This engaging martial art allows participants to explore and master the historical techniques of throwing various pre-17th century projectiles, all within a safe and controlled environment.
SCA Thrown Weapons is a blend of precision, power, and historical recreation. It's a skill that was vital for hunting, defense, and even sport in period times, and our activities bring that legacy to life:
- The Art of the Throw: Participants learn the proper techniques for throwing axes, throwing knives, and spears. This includes understanding balance, grip, body mechanics, and follow-through to achieve accuracy and consistency.
- Historical Tools: We use blunted, purpose-built throwing axes, knives, and spears that are designed for safety and durability on the range. These weapons are often crafted by fellow SCA members, reflecting historical designs.
- Target Practice: The primary focus is on accuracy, with archers aiming for various types of targets, typically wooden rounds or specially designed log sections.
- Variety of Challenges: Beyond basic target practice, you might encounter themed shoots that challenge your precision or speed, such as hitting specific zones, quick successive throws, or even throwing from different stances or distances.
- No Prior Experience Needed: Thrown Weapons is a very accessible activity. Newcomers are always welcome, and experienced throwers and marshals are eager to provide instruction and share tips on technique and safety.
Safety is Paramount
As with all SCA combat and martial activities, safety is the absolute priority in Thrown Weapons.
- Warranted Thrown Weapons Marshals: All ranges are strictly overseen by trained and authorized marshals who enforce safety rules, inspect equipment, and ensure that all participants are throwing safely.
- Controlled Environment: Throwing ranges are set up with clear safety zones, proper backstops, and a strict adherence to range commands to prevent accidents.
- Equipment Inspection: All thrown weapons are inspected by marshals to ensure they meet SCA safety standards before they can be used.
Thrown Weapons offers a unique and satisfying way to connect with a fundamental historical skill. It's a fantastic activity for developing coordination, focus, and a deeper appreciation for the martial heritage of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Come give it a try and feel the power of an ancient skill in your hands!

Siege Weapons in the SCA: Engineering the Past
For those fascinated by the grand scale of medieval warfare and the ingenuity of historical engineering, Siege Weapons in the SCA offer a unique and powerful way to engage with history. This discipline focuses on the construction and safe operation of period-style siege engines, bringing the awe-inspiring power of trebuchets, ballistae, and catapults to life on the battlefield.
SCA siege engineers and crews dedicate themselves to researching, building, and operating these impressive machines, which are primarily used in large-scale combat scenarios, often during "wars" or major events. It's a blend of historical mechanics, practical craftsmanship, and teamwork:
- Historical Research & Design: The journey begins with in-depth research into historical siege engines. Participants study blueprints, historical accounts, and archaeological findings to understand the principles behind their construction and operation, striving for historical accuracy in design.
- Construction: Building a siege engine is a major undertaking, often a long-term project for a group or household. It involves:
- Woodworking: Sourcing and shaping large timbers for the frame, arms, and other structural components.
- Ropemaking & Cordage: Crafting strong, period-appropriate ropes and twisted cords (often from natural fibers) for tension and torsion engines.
- Metalwork: Forging custom brackets, pins, and other hardware necessary for assembly and function.
- Engineering Principles: Applying an understanding of leverage, torsion, tension, and ballistics to ensure the machine functions effectively and safely.
- Ammunition: Unlike historical siege weapons that launched heavy stones or flaming projectiles, SCA siege weapons are designed to launch safe, blunted "ammunition." This typically consists of tennis balls, soft foam projectiles, or specially constructed padded projectiles, ensuring safety for combatants on the field.
- Operation & Teamwork: Operating a siege engine requires a dedicated crew and precise coordination. Teams learn the commands, loading procedures, aiming techniques, and firing sequences to effectively deploy their "heavy artillery" during battles. The power and range of these machines can dramatically influence battlefield tactics.
Safety and Regulations
Given the scale and power of siege engines, safety is the highest priority in the SCA.
- Strict Regulations: All siege engines must adhere to rigorous SCA construction and operational safety standards, which are among the most detailed in the Society.
- Warranted Siege Marshals: Only highly trained and warranted Siege Marshals are authorized to oversee the construction, inspection, and operation of these devices, ensuring strict adherence to all rules.
- Dedicated Firing Lines & Safety Zones: Siege engines operate from designated areas with large, clearly marked safety zones to protect both operators and those on the battlefield.
Participating in Siege Weapons in the SCA offers an unparalleled opportunity to engage with medieval engineering on a grand scale. It's an incredibly rewarding pursuit that builds skills in craftsmanship, teamwork, and a deep appreciation for the technological might of the past. Come discover the thrill of building and commanding these giants of the battlefield!
