The Kingdom of Northshield: Our Corner of the Current Middle Ages
Welcome to the Kingdom of Northshield, one of the vibrant sovereign realms within the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA)! Established as the 18th Kingdom of the SCA in A.S. XXXIX (2004), Northshield is a thriving community dedicated to researching and re-creating the best parts of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, right here in the present day.
Our Kingdom is a land of diverse landscapes, from the great lakes and forests to the vast plains, mirroring the varied interests and pursuits of our populace. We are known for our strong traditions in both the martial arts and the diverse Arts & Sciences, fostering a welcoming environment for newcomers and seasoned participants alike.
The Kingdom of Northshield covers a significant portion of the North American heartland, including:
- In the United States:
- All of Wisconsin
- All of Minnesota
- All of North Dakota
- All of South Dakota
- The Upper Peninsula of Michigan (western half)
- In Canada:
- All of Manitoba
- Northwestern Ontario (specifically the area around Thunder Bay)
Within these expansive borders, you'll find numerous local groups – shires, cantons, and baronies – each with its own local flavor and activities, all contributing to the larger Kingdom community. Our heraldic device, a compass rose argent within a laurel wreath on a sable (black) field, crowned with an ancient crown Or (gold), symbolizes our vast territory and our commitment to exploring the "Known World" of the SCA. The Shire of Border Downs: Sioux Falls and Beyond
Welcome to the Shire of Border Downs, a thriving local chapter of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) located within the vast Kingdom of Northshield. We are a community of enthusiasts dedicated to researching and re-creating the rich history, arts, and martial skills of pre-17th century Europe, right here in the present day.
The Shire of Border Downs was established in the early 1990s and serves a distinct geographical area, including:
- The Sioux Falls metropolitan area in South Dakota
- Portions of Southwest Minnesota
Within our Shire, members gather regularly to engage in a wide variety of activities, mirroring the diverse interests found across the larger SCA. Whether your passion lies in the excitement of armored combat or rapier duels, the meticulous crafting of period arts and sciences (from brewing to weaving to calligraphy), or simply enjoying the camaraderie of medieval-themed feasts and social gatherings, you'll find a welcoming home in Border Downs.
We host local fighter practices, Arts & Sciences workshops, meetings, and various events throughout the year, providing opportunities for both newcomers and experienced members to learn, share, and grow.
