March Missive

Greetings, Northshield,

I want to draw your attention to a few current opportunities within the Heraldic and Scribal communities.

First, the Northshield Heraldic and Scribal Symposium with be held March 24th in the Barony of Caer Anterth Mawr. This is an entire day of classes on various topics related to holding the office of herald, voice heraldry, name and armory heraldry, calligraphy, illumination, and the science behind the scribal arts. The event will feature attendance by Mistress Juliana de Luna, Laurel Queen of Arms. The Event Stewards are working on arrangements for viewings of a collection of SCA-period manuscripts, including a rare set of 12 Spanish antiphonals (circa 1562), a full Book of Hours, and various other manuscripts and leaves. In addition to the scribal collections, the site hosts the St. Joan of Arc Chapel, a Gothic chapel first built in 1420 and brought to the US in the early 20th Century. (Plans for the voice heraldry class include a “field trip” to try the acoustics of a real medieval space.) New Heralds and Scribes always welcome and we hope to see you there.

Second, the Northshield College of Heralds has some opportunities for service at the Kingdom level. Current openings include Compass Herald who is the General Deputy for Polaris, the Clerk of Precedence who tracks all the awards for members of the populace, and the Kingdom Signet who is a senior deputy to Polaris Herald and frequently coordinates with Their Majesties regarding scroll needs. . If you have an interest in service in one of these roles, please send your questions or application to Polaris Herald at herald@northshield.org.. Compass will remain open until filled. The Kingdom Signet deadline to apply is April 14. The deadline to apply for Clerk of Precedence is May 1.

Last, we will continue to schedule consultation tables around the Kingdom. This is a great opportunity to learn about “book heraldry” or to receive assistance with your own name, device, or badge.
